When his sons were mercilessly killed, for no real reason, he took action and wreaked havoc on the Yankees. He was a true Man of the West. An enraged and determined man is a very fearsome and dangerous thing.
It is almost as if the character from Mel Gibson’s The Patriot was partially based on this guy (though I know he was really representing Francis Marion).
