There Is No Try

The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite, and probably the best of the three, real Star Wars movies. An abominable snowman shows up, right at the beginning. Han puts Luke inside a recently deceased snow kangaroo horse so he doesn’t freeze to death. Later, Han ends up getting frozen in carbonite! I wonder if George was somewhere cold when he was writing this one.

It’s been 40 years since The Empire Strikes Back was released. That’s right, 40 years. I can’t remember what younger me’s favorite part would have been. Now that I’m older and a bit wiser, I’d say one of my favorite scenes happens when Yoda is training Luke.

Yoda: “Always with you what cannot be done. Hear you nothing that I say? You must unlearn what you have learned.”

Luke: “Alright, I’ll give it a try.”

Yoda: “No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

That’s a timeless piece of wisdom. Trying to do something does not make it happen. Wanting to do something does not make it happen. Thinking about doing something does not make it happen. Talking with other people about doing something does not make it happen. Doing is what makes it happen.

I had been thinking about writing content for this website for a while, probably for a year at least. But all that thinking didn’t make any posts magically appear. One day, something happened and I wanted to share it. I sat down, started typing, and put it up.

I want to encourage you to get out there and do. We all have something we want to do, but haven’t. Like I said in an earlier post, life is short; we don’t have unlimited time on this side of heaven. Make time for your thing and get it done.

One thing I finally did was put in a raised-bed garden. Given the current situation, I imagine a lot of folks are seeing the benefits of gardening. It doesn’t take a lot of space, and if you don’t have space you can do some container gardening. If you need gardening advice, check out David The Good’s posts.

Maybe you’re thinking, “I can’t.” There’s always going to be people who say “you can’t.” Don’t be one of those people.
